The problem is that we all know people in their twenties, thirties and forties who act like elderly people and we all know people in their fifties sixties and seventies who act like kids.

Many years ago I had a thirty-five year old neighbour who seemed to live life by numbers. His dress sense was whatever was current in Marks and Spencer and the house looked like a show home, devoid of all personality. Holidays were always to the same place and his idea of rock & roll would have been Mozart.

At the same time we had a friend who had a home like a Doctor Who set with a most active social life particularly on the independent music scene and who climbed foreign mountains for a hobby. That friend was seventy-two years old!

Some people may even be insulted by the term mature dating or as it sometimes known, seniors dating. Heaven help the person who describes my mother as a senior. To her the only thing senior or mature about her is her body. Physical ageing is something that we have very little control over outside of weight, fitness and the usual lotions and potions.

To my mother and many other people like me and perhaps you, we prefer to judge and be judged by our actions and not our physical age.

There is a wonderful poem called an old woman's poem which I can recommend and will certainly make you cry. The poem begins with the lines -

What do you see, nurse, what do you see,
what are you thinking when you're looking at me?
A crabby old woman, not very wise,
uncertain of habit, with faraway eyes.

Who dribbles her food and makes no reply
when you say in a loud voice, "I do wish you'd try?"
Who seems not to notice the things that you do,
and forever is losing a stocking or shoe.

The poem goes on to say that they have all got it wrong because they see the physical shell and not the young and vibrant woman behind the eyes.

So, mature dating to me means absolutely nothing for the same reason. I refuse to be classified by age or appearance. In my head and actions I am still twenty-two.
